Customized instruction

Voice lessons for kids, teens and adults.

Early voice lessons are about singing that feels easy: a short warm-up, posture and breathing that support the voice, matching pitch, and a song in a comfortable range. As that settles, lessons add range, tone, diction and the confidence to sing in front of other people.

I · KidsFoundational

Voice lessons for kids

A child’s voice is still growing: it is lighter and higher than an adult’s and tires sooner. So children’s lessons stay short and gentle, with singing in tune, rhythm, simple breathing and songs they love, and a good teacher steers a child away from imitating an adult singer’s power or belting. Before private lessons, a choir or music class is a lovely start.

What lessons focus on

  • Singing in tune
  • Gentle breathing and posture
  • Songs in a comfortable range
II · TeensPerformance

Voice lessons for teens

Teens often come with a goal: a school musical, a choir audition, a band or songs of their own. A teacher also helps them keep singing comfortably through the voice change, which happens to girls as well as boys.

What lessons focus on

  • Musicals, choirs and auditions
  • Singing through the voice change
  • Songwriting and their own style
III · AdultsRecreational

Adult voice lessons

It is never too late to start. Adults often come wanting to sing in tune with confidence, to join a choir, or to sing a favorite song well. Lessons build breath, a steady tone and range at a pace that fits a working week.

What lessons focus on

  • Singing in tune with confidence
  • Breath and a steady tone
  • Songs you have always wanted to sing
Common questions

Frequently asked questions about voice lessons.

What to expect when you start voice lessons in Denver.

How much do voice lessons in Denver cost?

Lessons with our voice teachers start at $37 for a 30-minute lesson. Rates depend on the teacher and the lesson length, and each teacher’s rate is on their profile. Requesting a match is free and does not book or charge anything.

What age can a child start singing lessons?

Voice teachers differ. Some start private lessons around 7 or 8, in short, gentle sessions; many prefer 10 or older and suggest a choir first. Good signs a child may be ready: they sing often, they can sing back a short tune you sing to them, and they can stay focused for a short lesson. Adults can start at any age.

What if I can’t sing in tune?

Most people can improve with practice. True tone deafness, called congenital amusia, is rare: one large study of 20,000 people put it at about 1.5 percent. Many people who sing off key have simply not practiced matching pitch, or are singing in a range that is too high or too low for them. Short, regular pitch practice with a teacher listening can help a lot.

Do you teach music at Denver schools?

Yes. This school year we run after-school music classes at Asbury Elementary, Bromwell Elementary, French American School of Denver, Steck Elementary and University Park Elementary. Sign-up runs through each school, so contact us and we will tell you how it works at yours.

Can we take lessons online from anywhere in Denver?

Yes. Every one of our teachers teaches online, so you can learn from home anywhere in Denver. Choose online in the matching form, or ask for the studio if you would rather come in.

Do I need to read music for singing lessons?

No. Many singers start by ear, learning songs from recordings and from the teacher. If reading would help your goals, for a choir for example, your teacher can introduce it a little at a time.

What happens in the first singing lesson?

Your teacher usually asks you to sing something you already know, to hear where your voice sits. Then you work through a short warm-up, breathing and posture, and some pitch matching, and you leave with a song to work on and a few exercises for the week.

How long should I practice singing?

Singing uses small muscles that tire with heavy use, so short, focused sessions on most days, starting with a few minutes of warm-up, are kinder to the voice than one long session a week. If your voice feels tired, sounds hoarse or hurts, rest it and tell your teacher.

What happens to a teenager’s voice when it changes?

Every teen’s voice changes, girls’ as well as boys’. Boys’ voices can drop by about an octave, most often between 12 and 16, and may crack while they do; girls’ voices change less, and can feel less steady for a while. Cracks and a smaller range are usually normal. Many voice teachers suggest singing on, gently and in a comfortable range, and resting if the voice feels tired.

Can singing lessons help with an audition or a school musical?

Yes. Bring the audition song or the show’s music and work on it with your teacher. Teacher profiles list skills such as audition preparation and musical theater, so you can look for a teacher who lists them.

How do I look after my voice?

Drink water through the day, avoid yelling, and rest when your voice is tired. If singing leaves you hoarse, it may have been too loud, too high or too long. See a doctor if hoarseness lasts more than about two weeks, and get medical help right away if it comes with trouble breathing or swallowing, or with pain.

Where are voice lessons in Denver?

In person at our studio at 1111 S Pierce St, Denver, CO 80232, in southwest Denver, or online from anywhere in the city. Choose online in the matching form, or ask for the studio when we follow up.

How do I find a voice teacher?

Complete the four-step matching form with the learner, experience level, availability and contact details. A person reads every request and follows up with teachers who suit the student and the times you gave us.
