Free Online Vocal Tuner and Pitch Finder

Sing a note and see right away whether you are on it, a little low (flat) or a little high (sharp). Tap a note to hear it first, then sing it back. It is a simple way to practice singing in tune at home.

This tuner needs JavaScript and a microphone. A free chromatic tuner app on a phone works the same way.

How to use the vocal tuner

  1. Tap a note under the tuner to hear it. Choose Lower voices in the menu if the notes feel too high to sing comfortably.
  2. Press Start tuner and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  3. Sing the same note back on a relaxed "ah" and hold it for two seconds.
  4. Watch the dot. In the green middle, you are on the note. Left of the middle is a little low (flat), and right of it is a little high (sharp).
  5. If you are off, stop, listen to the note again, and imagine it in your head before you sing.

The tuner also works for any instrument that plays one note at a time, such as a flute, a trumpet or a bass. It shows the nearest note and how far off it you are.

Listen, think, then sing

Most people who sing out of tune have simply not practiced matching pitch, and it improves with a few minutes of practice a day. The most useful habit is to add a step in the middle. Hear the note, think it silently, hum it quietly, and only then sing it aloud. That short pause makes a remarkable difference.

Tips for practicing with a tuner

  • Stay in a comfortable range. Notes that are too high or too low are hard to hold steady, and straining can tire the voice.
  • Sing at a medium volume. Pushing for volume tends to make notes go sharp.
  • Do not chase the dot. A voice naturally moves a little. Aim for the note, then glance at the tuner to check, rather than steering by the screen.
  • Keep sessions short. Five minutes of pitch practice a day does more than one long session a week.
  • Find a quiet spot so the microphone hears only your voice.

Common questions

Does this tuner record me? No. The sound is analyzed inside your browser while the tuner is on, and it never leaves your device. Press Stop, or close the page, and the microphone turns off.

Why does the note jump around? A voice is never perfectly still, especially at the start and end of a note. Hold a steady "ah" for a couple of seconds and the reading settles.

What if the tuner shows the right note in the wrong octave? That is fine. Men and children often sing the same note an octave apart, and the letter name is what matters for singing in tune.
