Free Online Guitar Tuner

Tune your guitar with the microphone on your phone or computer. Press Start, play one string at a time, and the tuner shows whether each string is too low, too high or in tune. It works for acoustic, classical and electric guitars.

This tuner needs JavaScript and a microphone. Standard guitar tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E A D G B E.

How to use the guitar tuner

  1. Press Start tuner and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  2. Hold the guitar near the microphone, pluck the thickest string and let it ring.
  3. The tuner finds the string for you. If it says the string is too low, tighten it by turning its tuning peg a little. If it says too high, loosen it.
  4. When the note turns green and the tuner says it is in tune, move on to the next string.
  5. Check all six once more at the end. Tuning one string can pull the others slightly.

You do not need to choose a string: the tuner finds the one that is ringing. To tune one string only, which helps when it is very far off, tap it under the tuner, and tap it again to go back. Press Hear to listen to the note first, a good way to train your ear.

Standard guitar tuning

From the thickest string to the thinnest, standard tuning is E A D G B E. Guitarists number the strings the other way round, so the thin high E is string 1. A memory trick many teachers use is "Every Amateur Does Get Better Eventually."

StringNoteFrequency
6 (thickest)E282.41 Hz
5A2110.00 Hz
4D3146.83 Hz
3G3196.00 Hz
2B3246.94 Hz

Drop D tuning lowers only the thickest string, from E down to D, which makes some rock and folk songs easier to play. Choose Drop D in the menu on the tuner.

Tips for a quick, accurate tune

  • Tune up to the note. If a string is too high, loosen it a little below the note and bring it back up. Strings hold their tuning better that way.
  • Turn slowly. Small turns make big changes, especially on the thin strings, and turning too far is how strings break.
  • Find a quiet spot. A microphone hears the whole room, so music or talking nearby can confuse it.
  • Electric guitars are quiet unplugged. Hold the guitar close to the microphone, or play through the amp at a low volume.
  • Expect new strings to drift. New strings stretch for several days, and nylon strings take longest. Retune before every practice.

Common questions

Does this tuner record me? No. The sound is analyzed inside your browser while the tuner is on, and it never leaves your device. Press Stop, or close the page, and the microphone turns off.

Why is the tuner not reacting? Check that your browser is allowed to use the microphone, then press Start again. Play a little closer to the microphone and let each string ring for a second or two.

Which way do I turn the peg? Pluck the string and turn the peg slightly while you listen. If the note goes up, you are tightening. If it goes down, you are loosening.
