Free Online Ukulele Tuner

Tune your ukulele with the microphone on your phone or computer. It works for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles in standard G C E A tuning, with a low G option. Press Start, play one string at a time, and the tuner shows which way to turn.

This tuner needs JavaScript and a microphone. Standard ukulele tuning, from the string nearest your face to the one nearest the floor, is G C E A.

How to use the ukulele tuner

  1. Press Start tuner and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  2. Hold the ukulele near the microphone, pluck the string nearest your face and let it ring.
  3. The tuner finds the string for you. If it says the string is too low, tighten it with its tuning peg. If it says too high, loosen it.
  4. When the note turns green and the tuner says it is in tune, move on to C, then E, then A.
  5. Check all four once more at the end.

You do not need to choose a string: the tuner finds the one that is ringing. To tune one string only, which helps when it is very far off, tap it under the tuner, and tap it again to go back. Press Hear to listen to the note first, a good way to train your ear.

Standard ukulele tuning

Standard tuning is G C E A, from the string nearest your face to the one nearest the floor. Many people remember it by singing "My Dog Has Fleas" to those four notes.

StringNoteFrequency
4 (nearest your face)G4392.00 Hz
3C4261.63 Hz
2E4329.63 Hz
1 (nearest the floor)A4440.00 Hz

Notice that the G string is higher than the C next to it, so the strings do not run from low to high. This is called re-entrant tuning, and it gives the ukulele its bright, cheerful sound. Some players use a thicker low G string tuned an octave lower instead. If your ukulele is set up that way, choose Low G in the menu on the tuner.

A baritone ukulele is tuned differently, to D G B E, the same as the four thinnest strings of a guitar. Use our guitar tuner for a baritone.

Tips for a quick, accurate tune

  • New strings stretch a lot. Ukulele strings are nylon or a similar material, and new ones can take a week or more to settle. Retune every time you pick it up, and it will hold its tuning longer each day.
  • Tune up to the note. If a string is too high, loosen it a little below the note and bring it back up.
  • Turn gently. A small turn of the peg is often all it takes.
  • Find a quiet spot so the microphone hears only the ukulele.

Common questions

Does this tuner record me? No. The sound is analyzed inside your browser while the tuner is on, and it never leaves your device. Press Stop, or close the page, and the microphone turns off.

Why does my ukulele keep going out of tune? Usually because the strings are new and still stretching. Changes in temperature and humidity affect tuning too. If it still will not hold after a couple of weeks, ask a music shop to check the tuning pegs.

Is a ukulele a good first instrument for a child? For many children, yes. It is small, light and gentle on the fingers, and simple chords come quickly.
