Violin lessons for kids, teens and adults.

Most new violinists spend their first weeks on three things before a tune: holding the violin and bow comfortably, plucking and then bowing the open strings, and hearing when a note is in tune. The first finger patterns and simple melodies follow. Shifting and vibrato come later, once those basics feel steady.

I · KidsFoundational

Violin lessons for kids

A young beginner plays a small violin sized to their arm. Early lessons stay short and playful: standing tall with the violin, plucking the open strings, simple rhythms on one string, then first songs. At this age a parent who listens in and helps with a few minutes of practice each day makes a big difference.

What lessons focus on

  • A violin sized to their arm
  • Bow hold and open-string rhythms
  • A few minutes of practice every day
II · TeensPerformance

Violin lessons for teens

Teens often arrive with a school orchestra part or an audition in mind. Lessons can work on the music in front of them, on reading and scales that make orchestra parts easier, and on shifting and vibrato when they are ready for them.

What lessons focus on

  • Orchestra parts and auditions
  • Reading, scales and intonation
  • Shifting and vibrato
III · AdultsRecreational

Adult violin lessons

Adults usually play a full-size violin and build the same foundations: a comfortable setup, a steady bow and notes that sound in tune. Bring the music you want to play, from fiddle tunes to film scores, and set a practice routine that fits a working week.

What lessons focus on

  • A comfortable, pain-free setup
  • Bow control and tone
  • Music you choose
Common questions

Frequently asked questions about violin lessons.

What to expect when you start violin lessons in Denver.

How much do violin lessons in Denver cost?

Lessons with our violin teachers start at $33 for a 30-minute lesson. Rates depend on the teacher and the lesson length, and each teacher’s rate is on their profile. Requesting a match is free and does not book or charge anything.

What age can a child start violin lessons?

Many children start between 5 and 7, when they can follow short instructions and focus for a few minutes. Readiness matters more than the exact age. Suzuki programs often begin earlier, around 3 or 4, with a parent learning alongside. Adults can start at any age.

What size violin does my child need?

Violins come in sizes from 1/16, for a small child, up to full size, called 4/4. The size goes by arm length: with the left arm stretched out and the palm up, measure from the base of the neck to the middle of the palm. If your child falls between two sizes, the smaller one is usually the safer choice, because a violin that is too big is harder and less comfortable to play. A teacher or a string shop can check the fit. Many players move to full size somewhere around 11 to 13, depending on arm length.

Do you teach music at Denver schools?

Yes. This school year we run after-school music classes at Asbury Elementary, Bromwell Elementary, French American School of Denver, Steck Elementary and University Park Elementary. Sign-up runs through each school, so contact us and we will tell you how it works at yours.

Can we take lessons online from anywhere in Denver?

Yes. Every one of our teachers teaches online, so you can learn from home anywhere in Denver. Choose online in the matching form, or ask for the studio if you would rather come in.

Should we rent or buy a violin?

For a growing child, renting from a string shop is usually the sensible start. Many rentals can be swapped for the next size up as your child grows, and many shops put part of what you have paid toward buying later. Ask how trade-ins work before you sign. An adult on a full-size violin can buy sooner; bring it to a lesson so the teacher can check the setup.

What happens in the first violin lessons?

Your teacher shows you how to stand or sit with the violin, how to hold the bow, and the names of the parts you will hear about every week. You will pluck the open strings to learn their sound, then draw the bow across them, then add the first fingers for simple tunes. It is normal for the bow hold to feel awkward at first.

How long should a beginner practice?

At the start, 5 to 15 minutes a day is plenty, and a very young child may manage 5 to 10. Several short sessions often work better than one long one. Playing most days matters more than playing for a long time, and your teacher will add time as the music grows.

Can violin lessons help with school orchestra or an audition?

Yes. Bring your orchestra part or audition list to lessons and work on it with your teacher. Teacher profiles show the skills each one teaches, including audition preparation, so you can look for a teacher who lists it.

How do I keep my violin in tune at home?

The four strings are G, D, A and E, from lowest to highest. If your violin has fine tuners on the tailpiece, use those for small changes, and ask your teacher to show you the pegs before you turn them. Our free violin tuner, linked in the guides below, listens through your device’s microphone and shows each string as you play it.

Where are violin lessons in Denver?

In person at our studio at 1111 S Pierce St, Denver, CO 80232, in southwest Denver, or online from anywhere in the city. Choose online in the matching form, or ask for the studio when we follow up.

How do I find a violin teacher?

Complete the four-step matching form with the learner, experience level, availability and contact details. A person reads every request and follows up with teachers who suit the student and the times you gave us.
