I was born and raised in southern California and I took my first piano lesson at the age of six. I was initially one of those students who took lessons only because my parents signed me up, and thus I didn’t grow up being the most dedicated at practicing. When I was 14, I auditioned for and was accepted to the Orange County High School of Arts, and during my years there, music became a way for me to open up and develop socially. This in turn led me to choose music as a career and pass on a wonderful gift to help others discover their potential not only as musicians, but also as well-rounded human beings. I hold a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in musicology, and while I am classically trained, I have recently been cultivating my jazz skills! My favorite classical composers are Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Gershwin, but I am also a fan of alternative rock such as Coldplay and Linkin Park, as well as 1990s music!

I started teaching piano in 2012 near the end of my master’s degree work and as the demand for lessons grew, I shifted my career focus from music research to teaching piano. Since then, I have taught a variety of age groups and levels from preschoolers to adults, as well as in various settings such as private schools, students’ homes, and (since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic) online through Zoom. I also enjoy having my students collaborate on duets to emphasize the social aspect of making music and sharing that gift with others.

Music started as a teenager’s hobby. In a somewhat random choice I ended up playing flute in Porto’s Conservatory, with Iwona Saiote. The challenge of mastering an instrument and a new artistic expression made me pursue my studies in a Bachelor degree at ESMAE (High School of Music and Performative Arts), 6 years later. Under the ERASMUS program I studied at the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium in Belgium, with Aldo Baerten and Peter Verhoyen.

Returning to Portugal I concluded a master degree on Music teaching, at Aveiro University (2011), specialized in flute, and started to work as a teacher. By this time I realized that classical music had been more a challenge than a passion and that jazz music gave me much more pleasure as a listener. So I started learning jazz in a private school and soon wanted to pursue it more seriously. As there was no flute in jazz colleges in Portugal I started learning saxophone, which seemed much easier that it actually was. Some years of hard work enabled me to get a jazz bachelor degree, at ESMAE in 2017, and add not only a new musical language but also a new instrument to my creative and performative options.

Along the years I worked with different chamber and jazz groups, a few composers, and made part of some disk record projects.

Between 2017 and 2019 I dedicated to a jazz sextet with my own original songs and arrangements and to starting a swing band “The bouncing brothers”.

Since September 2019 I’m in a PhD course, in Coimbra University, on Artistic Studies, where I’ve been studying the processes of music perception (how we hear a group of sounds and give a musical meaning to it) and how it affects our time perception.

I would like to share with you a little more about myself and why I can help others achieve their musical goals.

My love for music started at a very young age, but that love took on a whole new dimension when I began playing the guitar at age 11. I was hooked on the instrument and soon began finding myself teaching others by the age of 17. As I continued to play and teach, I eventually found myself touring with many artists as well as recording professionally for television and film. My success in the industry thus far has led me now towards the role of both producer and songwriter. I play many styles of music, love all styles of music and will continue on with my passion for teaching and helping others reach their musical goals.

MUSIC IS A JOURNEY
A sidekick that tags along as you shape the musical score of your life. Playing an instrument and bettering yourself at it, is similar to sharpening a powerful tool that will allow you to slice through mundane social conventions, regardless of language barrier, a key, that will open unsuspected doors, as you connect with humanity on a deeper level.

The shaping of the soundtrack of my life has opened wide horizons for me. From braving tumultuous open seas on a fishing boat in the Pacific Northwest to playing music at the Grand Opry Radio Station in Nashville, Tennessee. From reforesting Northern Canada to appearing in various Hollywood movies, namely, an IMAX production in Denver, Colorado, as well as numerous TV appearances throughout Canada, USA and Mexico.
From playing hybrid world music in the foothills of the Hymalayas in India, to opening for many artists such as Sarah McLachlan , Don Ross and performing 6 years as a guitarist on the Mega equestrian show : CAVALIA ODYSSEO.
I spent about ten years on my sailboat in Canada, cruising the waters from Vancouver to Alaska. The formidable landscapes and the vast coniferous forests forming a surreal background for introspection as I honed my skills on the guitar, picking and strumming my way through numerous musical styles such as : gypsy jazz manouche,Chet Atkins style fingerpicking, bluegrass, jazz, blues and flamenco.
SOMETIMES IN LIFE
you find something very valuable and you feel the urge to share it. That’s what teaching is about for me. Laying out a personalized map for someone to find their musical treasure.
THE JOURNEY, a combination of inspiration and perspiration provides countless benefits ranging from: better and sharper mental health, enhanced self-worth and self-confidence and the developments of the mathematical and problem solving part of the brain that extend well beyond the musical realm.
