Guitar lessons: common questions

Acoustic, electric or classical?

Start with the sound you love. Acoustic and electric guitars use the same chords; a classical guitar has softer nylon strings that are kind to new fingers. This page shows teachers of every kind, and each profile says which they teach.

What size guitar does a child need?

Younger children usually play a half or three-quarter size guitar so they can reach the strings comfortably. If you are not sure, ask your teacher before you buy; they will tell you what fits.

How do online guitar lessons work?

You join a video call with your guitar and a phone, tablet or laptop placed so your teacher can see both hands. They demonstrate, watch you play, and help with tuning, chords and strumming in real time.

How does the first lesson work?

Your first lesson with a new teacher can be a free trial, so you can see whether you click before you commit. Pick a time on their profile and they will confirm it. If plans change, you can cancel or move a lesson up to 24 hours before it starts at no charge.
