Early lessons cover holding and tuning it, a first few chords and a steady strum, so you can often be playing songs within the first few lessons. Then come smoother chord changes, strumming patterns, fingerpicking and melodies.

Many children start somewhere around 5 to 7, and some start younger in a playful class. The ukulele is small, light and has soft nylon strings, so it is gentler on young fingers than a steel-string guitar. Being able to focus for a short lesson matters more than the exact age.
